ACPE Offering New Certificate Program for Advanced Physician Leaders
The American College of Physician Executives is launching a new certificate program designed to help experienced physicians build the leadership skills they need to be successful in today’s rapidly evolving health care environment.
ACPE’s new Physician Meta-Leader Certificate Program offers 65 hours of instruction on a variety of topics essential to building better leadership skills, including:
- Effective communication
- Resolving conflict
- Developing personal influence
- Learning from failure
The program was developed by Leonard Marcus, PhD, and Barry Dorn, MD, MHCM, the founding co-directors of the National Preparedness Leadership Initiative, a joint venture of the Harvard School of Public Health and the Harvard Kennedy School’s Center for Public Leadership. Recent research activities have taken them to the center of leadership situations involving emergency preparedness and response, such as the front lines of the Hezbollah-Israel war in 2006, the first inauguration of President Barack Obama in 2008 and Superstorm Sandy in 2012.
Dorn and Marcus are esteemed members of the ACPE faculty. Their popular course, Meta-Leadership: Removing Barriers and Building Bridges, offers instruction on how to integrate the work of different people to build quality patient care.
Meta-Leadership is an overarching leadership framework and problem-solving methodology. Becoming an ACPE Physician Meta-Leader will give you the knowledge and skills to look at every problem which is multi-dimensional in nature, examine the various components, understand who is involved and put them together to accomplish a successful outcome.
Meta-Leadership is composed of five dimensions that define outstanding leadership:
- The Person of the Meta-Leader: Your ability to understand your own emotional intelligence, weaknesses, biases and strengths so that one can lead with balance, discipline and direction.
- Situational Awareness: Your ability to accurately comprehend the situation or problem — even when full information is unavailable.
- Leading the Silo: Your ability to empower the people who work for you to achieve maximum effectiveness.
- Leading Up: Your ability to educate and help your superiors understand what you’re trying to do so they can make good decisions.
- Leading Across: Your ability to connect and inspire disparate stakeholders, departments/silos and other organizations to work together to accomplish a mission.
“In the evolving health care world, leadership matters,” Marcus said. “People who are able to work across the system and engage people, get them working together, will be able to be much more effective within their systems.”
The Meta-Leadership Certificate is designed specifically for physician leaders looking to move up the career ladder and work in organizations undergoing dramatic change. Dorn said the timing for this certificate is appropriate, given the big changes in health care with the creation of Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs).
“That’s one of the big frustrations for physicians,” Dorn said. “They keep changing the rules and they forget to hand out the new rulebook.”
In addition to Meta-Leadership, the other courses offered as part of the certificate include:
Communicating 2.0: Effective Strategies
Influence for Physician Leaders
Successful failure: An adaptive approach to turning adversity into opportunity
In addition to the 65 hours of instruction, students are required to complete a project to demonstrate their leadership abilities that will be presented at a final, live Capstone course. The first Capstone course will be offered at the 2014 Annual Meeting & Spring Institute, in Chicago, April 25-29, 2014.
ACPE CEO Peter Angood, MD, said the Meta-Leadership Certificate is the next step in ACPE’s mission to provide superior lifelong training and support for all physician leaders.
“Professor Dorn and Professor Marcus are known for their ground-breaking work on the subject of leadership,” Angood said. “I could not be more pleased to offer this important new certificate program, which we believe will help physicians make a lasting difference both within their organizations and throughout the health care industry.”
